Najet Miah

Federal Criminal Defense Intern

Najet Miah

Najet is entering her final year of Albany Law School’s four-year J.D. program. Her journey with the law has been an unconventional one, to say the least.

She was born and raised in NYC where she earned a B.A. in Psychology from Queens College. When she was 16, she was charged with Attempted Murder and eventually sentenced to an eight-year prison term. The experience transformed her and nurtured a profound belief in the potential of individuals and systems to change.

She views her legal education as a privilege and a responsibility to advocate with the special insight she has gained. As a law student, she’s had the opportunity to do this while interning with the Center for Law, Brain & Behavior, the Central American Refugee Center (CARECEN), NLG’s National Police Accountability Project (NPAP), and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). Among her most impactful work are cases challenging the federal terrorist watchlist, holding law enforcement and correctional officers accountable, and advocating for Muslim incarcerees.

Najet’s current role in MLFA’s Criminal Defense Department offers her a unique opportunity to bring her lived experience and legal training together in service of protecting the Muslim community.  She is specifically interested in understanding sentencing challenges that Muslim defendants face when they are prosecuted for terrorism-related offenses. She is grateful to be learning alongside such a talented and supportive defense team.

When she isn’t thinking deeply about her place in the law, Najet enjoys hiking, spending time with family, and solo travel dedicated to writing
