Haniyyah Zia

Haniyyah joined MLFA’s Criminal Defense Department as an undergraduate intern in May of 2024. She is currently pursuing a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies (Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics, and Government) with a concentration in Cyber Policy and Criminology from American University in Washington, D.C.. She is also on the Executive Board of the Muslim Student Association and regularly writes law review articles with the Juris Mentem Undergraduate Law Review. In addition, Haniyyah is a competitive attorney on the American University Mock Trial team and has been competing in mock trials for six consecutive years with an extensive background in persuasive speech and debate.

Haniyyah has previously interned with the City of Plano’s prosecution department and is committed to pursuing a career in criminal law. She intends to attend and complete law school after graduating from American University. As an intern with MLFA, Haniyyah hopes to learn more about national security law and aims to help her community navigate unjust uses of prosecutorial discretion.
