RAMADAN 2025

This Ramadan, your support will transform hardship into ease, paving the way towards true freedom. A holy month of reflection. For many in our communities, we are in a time of uncertainty—families separated, voices silenced, and futures placed on hold by an unequal legal system.

Mercy to Freedom: A Path Towards Justice

Despite this reality, we trust in Allah above all else. We’re promised that WITH hardship, comes EASE. Not after, not before, but alongside.

"So, surely with hardship comes ease."

Quran | 94:5

At Muslim Legal Fund of America, we are a part of that promised ease—your reliable guide and unwavering friend when you face legal complexities at the highest level of law in the land. We are the legal retainer for Muslims in America.

Our commitment to justice and mercy will never waver for Muslims in America who are unfairly targeted or detained.

Seeking forgiveness reminds us to challenge unjust systems and advocate for policies that uphold the dignity and worth of every individual.

Striving for freedom reminds us of our collective hope to break the chains of discrimination.

Steps to Justice: Stories of Impact

A kind and devout Muslim, our client came to the U.S. over 30 years ago for his studies, building a life, career, and family. His path to lawful permanent residency was abruptly halted when USCIS accused him of supporting terrorism.

Imagine waking up one day to find out you can no longer board a plane—not because of any crime, but because your name has been placed on the No Fly list without explanation.

Freedom can be taken away if we are not diligent in protecting it. MLFA’s Criminal Defense Department defends those like 68-year-old Mr. Wadi, whose freedom was unjustly taken from him and his family.

Imagine working tirelessly toward a scholarship—one that could open doors to a promising future—only to be denied, not because of your qualifications, but because of where your family is from.

For decades, Client #2 dreamed of becoming a U.S. citizen. He patiently waited to immigrate with his family, even delaying marriage to avoid complicating the visa process. When he finally arrived nearly 25 years ago, he returned home briefly to marry and start his own family.

When a young woman applied for U.S. immigration status, she never imagined that her husband's background would become a barrier to her own future

MLFA the Legal Retainer for Muslims in America

An easier way to give! Select a fund that resonates with you—each one is thoughtfully designed to serve and uphold your giving principles.

In the face of Bill 9495—a measure that poses a serious threat to the stability of countless Muslim nonprofit organizations—we are doubling down on our commitment to safeguard Muslim nonprofits by expanding and fortifying MLFA’s Federal Nonprofit Governance Fund.

This fund provides Muslim nonprofits with our expert-led Governance-Risk-Compliance (GRC) screenings, bylaws reviews, and legal clinics designed to bolster integrity and reduce unwarranted scrutiny. It also offers training—via Continuing Learning Education (CLE) courses, webinars, and workshops—that promotes ethical decision-making, transparency, and equitable participation.

Your support of this fund empowers our beloved Muslim American nonprofits to operate confidently within legal parameters and continue making meaningful contributions to society.

“The Charities are only for the extremely poor, the one with no supporting sources, those employed to collect the funds, and to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam); and for freeing the captives; and for those in debt, and for Allah’s cause, and for the wayfarer…”  Quran | 9:60

We protect the legal rights of Muslims in America who face discrimination, unjust prosecutions, or violations of their civil liberties. In line with the Qur’anic provision, our work is recognized as being “for Allah’s cause,” as it safeguards the dignity and well-being of the Muslim community. Through our top-tier expert pro bono legal defense and protection, we uphold justice—a core Islamic value.

Rest assured your gift is exclusively allocated where every zakat contribution is used responsibly to advance our core initiatives: providing expert legal defense in high-stakes federal criminal, civil, and immigration cases. It is often recommended to distribute zakat among eligible categories, including “for Allah’s cause.” We invite you to consider MLFA as part of that commitment.

The MLFA Justice Fund is our unrestricted resource, fueling the breadth of our mission to defend Muslim Americans and uphold their constitutional rights at the highest level of law in the land. Because these funds aren’t tied to a single program, they give us the strength and flexibility to respond where we’re needed most—whether it’s countering Islamophobia in the courtroom, navigating an unfriendly Congress, or challenging a legal system that too often dismisses critical issues under the guise of “national security.”

Your support builds a robust legal team, conducts strategic advocacy, and protects the freedoms of Muslims across the nation.

Finally, A Path to Justice
A kind and devout Muslim, our client came to the U.S. over 30 years ago for his studies, building a life, career, and family. His path to lawful permanent residency was abruptly halted when USCIS accused him of supporting terrorism—simply because his zakat donations went to a charity later flagged by the U.S. Treasury. Though he had no knowledge of any wrongdoing, USCIS denied his application, unfairly assuming guilt by association.
MLFA has stood by him for years, and our Immigration Litigation attorneys are now representing his new permanent residency application through his adult son. We’re challenging USCIS’s unjust conclusion and ensuring he maintains work authorization for years to come. His dedication to helping others should never have been mistaken for funding violence—and we won’t stop fighting for his right to stay.
Grounded Without Cause: Fighting for the Unjustly Targeted
Imagine waking up one day to find out you can no longer board a plane—not because of any crime, but because your name has been placed on the No Fly list without explanation. No charges, no due process, just a life put on hold. MLFA’s Civil Litigation team has fought for countless individuals unjustly caught in this web of suspicion, securing their right to travel and live freely. Among them:

– A 12-year-old boy barred from flying with his family.
– A grandmother with a brain tumor, unable to get urgent medical treatment.
– A father of young children, stranded across the world, unable to return home.
– A Palestinian rights advocate, silenced through travel restrictions.
– A young married couple, placed on the list without explanation.

And these are just a few.
For over a decade, our attorneys have helped U.S. citizens clear their names, ensuring justice prevails over baseless profiling. But the fight isn’t over. The No Fly list and Terrorist Watchlist continue to disrupt lives, imposing severe travel restrictions, invasive searches, and unjust barriers.
MLFA remains committed to challenging these injustices—because no one should be punished for simply existing.
Freedom is Not Free
Freedom can be taken away if we are not diligent in protecting it. MLFA’s Criminal Defense Department defends those like 68-year-old Mr. Wadi, whose freedom was unjustly taken from him and his family. Mr. Wadi came to the United States from Syria hoping to achieve the American Dream. After losing his gas station and falling into financial ruin, he never gave up trying to start a business to try to support his family. He tried everything, nothing worked, and maybe he was not the businessman he had hoped.
Then while doing odd plumbing jobs for Mr. Baker, an FBI informant, Mr. Wadi thought his luck had suddenly changed. FBI undercovers lured Mr. Wadi into a fake business deal, agreeing to fund 13 million dollars for his half-thought-out idea of running a halal beef business. Over multiple years of changing the terms of the deal, they ultimately required Mr. Wadi to give a small percent of the funds to aid fighters in Syria in exchange for the millions for his halal beef deal. When he agreed, the FBI arrested him and charged him with several terrorism-related crimes that they had created (Mr. Wadi never sent money or anything else to any fighters). MLFA fought for Mr. Wadi’s freedom at trial and explained how far the FBI went to entrap him into something he had never wanted to do. The jury convicted him after the government relied on anti-Muslim bias at trial, and the FBI informant lied, destroyed evidence, and was paid over $300,000 to entrap Mr. Wadi. We have fought every aspect of this case in court: classified evidence, secret witnesses, attempts to close the courtroom to the public, expansions of the criminal law, unfair jury trial issues etc.
Now, we are fighting for Mr. Wadi on appeal at the Fifth Circuit. Mr. Wadi is in federal prison. This Ramadan, we will be thinking of him and his family having iftar apart while we work on his appeal. Striving for Mr. Wadi’s freedom is striving for all of our freedom, and it is all of our responsibility.
Fighting for Fairness: Protecting Free Speech & Equal Opportunity
Imagine working tirelessly toward a scholarship—one that could open doors to a promising future—only to be denied, not because of your qualifications, but because of where your family is from.
That’s exactly what happened to our client at the University of New Mexico. His professor wrongly assumed he couldn’t obtain security clearance simply because he had relatives in a Muslim-majority country. As a result, he lost not just a scholarship, but multiple graduate opportunities tied to it.
His professor was wrong! He got his clearance. And thanks to MLFA’s Civil Litigation team, he got justice too.
– Monetary damages for the harm he endured.
– A formal letter of acknowledgment from the professor, congratulating him on his clearance.
– Institutional change, with the university agreeing to improve its cultural awareness training.
This victory isn’t just about one student—it’s about ensuring no one else faces discrimination in higher education. MLFA also fought for over a dozen Harvard students, holding the university accountable when it failed to uphold federal protections. The Department of Education recognized these failures, and Harvard committed to change.
We will continue defending students across the country, ensuring that bias and discrimination never stand in the way of opportunity.
A Citizen in Limbo: Fighting Decades of Injustice
For decades, Client #2 dreamed of becoming a U.S. citizen. He patiently waited to immigrate with his family, even delaying marriage to avoid complicating the visa process. When he finally arrived nearly 25 years ago, he returned home briefly to marry and start his own family. Over the years, he traveled back and forth to be with his wife and children, who sometimes had to relocate to escape insurgent violence. After five years, he was eager to apply for naturalization, believing his journey to full citizenship was finally within reach.
Then, everything stopped.
The U.S. government accused his U.S. citizen family members of supporting insurgents in their home country. His application stalled, and soon, he became a target himself. USCIS weaponized the Controlled Application Review and Resolution Process (CARRP) to delay and ultimately deny his application, falsely claiming that his visits to his family meant he had aided insurgents.
MLFA stepped in to fund his legal fight. In federal court, he disproved the government’s baseless allegations, yet both the district court and court of appeals ruled against him. After 12 years of fighting, he was forced to start over.
For the past five years, MLFA’s Immigration Litigation team has represented him in his second citizenship application, relentlessly challenging USCIS’s shifting accusations and refusal to honor due process. His case has been to federal court three times, and we are preparing for yet another battle. USCIS owes him a decision based on truth, not speculation.
His fight is not over—but neither is our commitment to justice.
Against the Odds: A Palestinian-American Immigration Victory
When a young woman applied for U.S. immigration status, she never imagined that her husband’s background would become a barrier to her own future. Married to a Palestinian-American previously investigated by the FBI, she feared her application would be unfairly scrutinized, delayed, or even denied—not because of anything she had done, but simply by association.
Thankfully, MLFA’s Immigration Litigation Department stepped in.
In late 2023, our legal team took swift action, filing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to uncover any potential roadblocks in her case. Given the systemic discrimination often faced by Palestinian-American families, they anticipated that U.S. immigration agencies might unjustly target her application. Instead of waiting for bias to take its course, MLFA fought back proactively.
What could have been a years-long ordeal ended in just eight and a half months—a remarkable achievement in an immigration system riddled with delays and discriminatory policies like the Controlled Application Review and Resolution Program (CARRP). This victory is even more significant given that most of MLFA’s immigration cases, especially those involving Palestinian-Americans, take much longer due to systemic obstacles.
The client and her husband, who initially planned to file their applications without legal representation, quickly realized how much was at stake. “We never realized how much we were at risk without professional legal support,” they shared. “MLFA made the entire process seamless.”
This case is more than just a success story—it is proof that MLFA’s Immigration Litigation team is breaking barriers, dismantling discrimination, and ensuring that every individual has a fair chance at justice.
This Ramadan, give the gift of freedom.
