DALLAS – December 17, 2015 – On December 9, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman sent a letter to Muslim Legal Fund of America Executive Director Khalil Meek to express support for the civil rights of Muslims in New York. In his letter, Schneiderman wrote:
Our nation’s rich history of religious diversity is reflected in the Bill of Rights and in laws that protect the rights of New Yorkers of every religion to freely practice their faith and to participate in every aspect of our society. As religious diversity across our country grows, these protections become even more important.
While some have chosen to exploit fear and anger by targeting certain religious minorities, I want to emphasize in the strongest possible terms that my office stands ready to enforce all state and federal civil rights laws protecting the liberty and equality of people of all religions.
Representatives from MLFA said that Muslims are facing the most frightening threats to their legal rights since the community activists established the organization in 2001.
“During a time when politicians compete with each other on how many civil liberties they can strip from Muslims in America, it is reassuring to receive word that the top legal official of the most diverse state in the Union pledges to uphold the U.S. Constitution and its Bill of Rights for all people – including Muslim New Yorkers,” Meek said. “We hope that other Attorney Generals around the nation will follow his example and openly reaffirm their commitment to American principles of freedom, liberty and equal justice for all.”
Meek said that he is thankful for the Attorney General’s support. MLFA will share the letter on its website at mlfa.org. Meek also encouraged freedom-loving Americans to reach out to the New York Attorney General’s office to thank Schneiderman and his team for their support of Muslims legal rights in America. Muslim Legal Fund of America (MLFA) is a national civil liberties legal fund that defends the U.S. Bill of Rights by supporting legal cases involving civil liberty encroachments. Established in 2001, MLFA has defended freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to a fair trial, due process of law and many of our nation’s civil liberties.
