MLFA is excited to announce the recent promotion of Sufia Khalid to Senior Staff Attorney in the Criminal Defense Department. Ms. Khalid’s promotion is well deserved

MLFA is excited and proud to announce that pursuant to the recommendation of the Legal Committee, the MLFA Board of Directors recently promoted Sufia Khalid to Senior Staff Attorney in the Criminal Defense Department. Ms. Khalid’s promotion is well deserved.

Over the past five and half plus years, Ms. Khalid has consistently made significant contributions to our work and has grown into the leadership role she assumes today. Her accomplishments include:

– Supporting the defense of 20 national security prosecutions;

– Acting as a de facto second chair in three contested national security trials, including playing a key role in our win in US. v Jason Fong, where the government dismissed all terrorism charges for a false statement plea, as well as the reduced sentence in Unites States v. Wadi.

– Briefing over 75 complex motions; and

– A demonstrated expert in federal sentencing guidelines calculations and arguments, resulting in extraordinary outcomes for our clients and others whom we assist.

Beyond Ms. Khalid’s significant contributions in all our litigation work, she also pioneered our national security policy reform efforts with the US Sentencing Commission, filing Comments on the draconian terrorism enhancement that were selected for publication in both 2023, and 2024.

In recognition of the above accomplishments, she was invited by the President of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) to join the NACDL National Security Committee, where she will represent MLFA’s interests for years to come.

In short, she has become a true partner in court to the Head of our Criminal Defense Department, Mr. Charles Swift, and a leader in our policy initiatives.
