MLFA and Sharp Law Firm Sue Indian River State College and Florida State Officials

On December 3, 2025, the Muslim Legal Fund of America (MLFA), along with attorney Christopher Sharp, of the Sharp Law Firm, P.A., filed a federal civil rights complaint on behalf of Professor Syed Ammar Ahmed, a longtime adjunct instructor at Indian River State College (“IRSC”). IRSC abruptly terminated Professor Ahmed after falsely labeling him a security threat based on racist and Islamophobic allegations from an online blog. Internal records show IRSC officials admitted he posed no threat at all — but still refused to reinstate him until months later.

What began as a routine inquiry about teaching assignments turned into a discriminatory and unlawful ordeal. On March 1, 2024, IRSC informed Professor Ahmed that he was being terminated because he allegedly appeared on an “FDLE Homeland Security database” for “terrorist threats.” No such database exists, and IRSC never produced any evidence supporting this claim. The allegation stemmed from an anti-Muslim article written by an extremist commentator, combined with decade-old social media posts from when Professor Ahmed was a minor — none of which created a legitimate security concern.

Despite the lack of evidence, IRSC removed him from the classroom immediately. But internal emails, produced only after a public records request, reveal that by April 5, 2024, IRSC’s own Chief of Campus Safety had already confirmed that Professor Ahmed had been misidentified, fully cleared, and “wrongfully terminated.” After realizing the error, Human Resources asked senior leadership to reinstate him and issue an apology. Instead, IRSC withheld this information, leaving him suspended for nearly five months, which caused his teaching certification to lapse, thereby sidelining him for three academic semesters.

The complaint also identifies the involvement of a Florida Board of Education member, who encouraged IRSC leadership to take action against Professor Ahmed based on Islamophobic materials. This coordination reflects a broader and deepening hostility toward Muslims within Florida’s education system – one that endangers the careers, rights, and safety of Muslim educators statewide.

“I am grateful beyond words to MFLA for pursuing justice and helping me regain my job. They were the only organization that responded to my email and addressed my case immediately. Without MFLA, I wouldn’t even know how to pursue legal action or how to get my job back. Thank you to the staff, leadership, and donors who support the tireless work of the org.” Syed Ammar Ahmed

Professor Ahmed dedicated years to serving his students and community. He was treated not as an educator or colleague, but as a threat – without evidence, without due process, and in defiance of IRSC’s own findings. Institutions of higher education should be places where truth and fairness guide decision-making, not places where discrimination, suspicion, and fear override facts.

This case stands as a stark reminder of the urgent need to protect the civil rights of Muslim educators and professionals who continue to face baseless accusations disguised as “security concerns.” MLFA is committed to ensuring accountability, transparency, and justice.

“We are proud to stand beside Mr. Ahmed, who has been a tireless advocate for himself from the start. We must hold our institutions of higher education to a higher standard; they cannot terminate someone simply based on discriminatory and unverified statements, only to reverse course when they are caught. This case is indicative of the experience facing many Muslims in Florida and across the country, where government and private individuals are acting with impunity, encouraged by anti-Muslim rhetoric at all levels of government. MLFA’s mission is to not let this type of behavior go unchallenged.” Samira Elhosary, Civil Litigation Staff Attorney

“State officials are openly targeting Muslims to exclude them from public life.  Going so far as to invent a false database to accuse a college instructor of supporting violence is racist, Islamophobic, and offensive.  MLFA will fight for Mr. Ahmed’s right to equal treatment with dignity and respect in employment, a right guaranteed to all Americans, including Muslim Americans, under the Civil Rights Act.” Chelsea Glover, Civil Litigation Senior Staff Attorney

“State officials and university administrators were so determined to disparage Professor Syed Ammar Ahmed that they invented a fictitious “security database” to justify targeting him, weaponizing the racist trope of the “terrorist threat” to legitimize discrimination. This conduct is deeply alarming, yet it reflects a familiar pattern that Muslim professionals across this country have been forced to endure for far too long. We refuse to allow this kind of abuse of power to become business as usual—especially when it so blatantly violates the law. We demand accountability not only for Professor Ammar, but to set a clear precedent that this kind of calculated injustice will be challenged to the fullest extent of the law.” Jinan Chehade, Civil Litigation Junior Staff Attorney
