ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise and support the criminal, civil, and immigration legal divisions of the organization
  • Advise on complex client cases and collaborate with attorneys to best support our clients
  • Serve as an ambassador and represent the organization positively in the community
  • Oversee the development and implementation of ethical and professional legal practices, procedures, and systems
  • Identify, communicate, and escalate issues to the CEO and Board of Directors in a timely manner
  • Partner with the CEO and executive team in developing and managing the annual budget and strategic planning
  • Assist with the recruitment and training of new staff
  • Monitor employee performance; provide coaching and performance feedback as needed
  • Develop, monitor, and report on key development and performance metrics
  • Plan and conduct regular staff meetings
  • Support the CEO with operational tasks as requested
  • Ensure work duties are being performed in accordance with safety and security policies and applicable state and federal regulations
  • Represent MLFA’s mission and values on a daily basis

EXPERIENCE – EDUCATION

  • JD degree from an accredited university
  • Ability to become a member of the State Bar of Texas
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive legal experience serving underrepresented populations
  • Specialization in immigration, civil, and or criminal law litigation
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in nonprofit management preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Indoor office setting with occasional outdoor exposure
  • Frequent use of computer, keyboard, and mouse
  • Moderate noise levels
  • Occasional travel (less than 20% of the time)

· Develop and implement a successful strategy for the solicitation of major gifts

· Responsible for cultivating relationships with donors

· Identify potential donors and contact them regularly to inform them of opportunities to support the organization’s mission

· Acknowledge major gifts and donations in a timely manner

· Assist with creating marketing material and donor communications

· Work closely with the Executive team and program staff to attain organizational goals

· Maintain donor database

· Create reports and presentations

· Support the CEO with operational tasks as requested

· Ensure work duties are being performed in accordance with safety and security policies and applicable state and federal regulations

· Represent MLFA’s mission and values on a daily basis

Muslim Legal Fund of America’s mission is to advance equality and justice for American Muslim organizations and individuals by promoting legal compliance and protecting their rights in matters concerning national security law.

ABOUT THE PARALEGAL POSITION

Our paralegals must work well in a diverse workplace and be willing to take on novel legal issues because our mission is focused on complex civil matters that may include litigation in federal courts. These cases require rigorous preparation of normally routine administrative matters with an eye toward federal litigation. Our paralegals must embrace the intellectual challenge of being on the front lines of changing legal landscapes. This position requires FT availability in the office located in Richardson, Texas.

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Support the Civil Department’s attorneys in handling administrative agency matters and federal court civil rights impact litigation

· Assist with administrative functions related to administrative and federal civil litigation cases

· Assist with intakes and pre-representation research, including conflicts checks

· Procure relevant documentation related to clients and claims

· Draft initial responses and appeals

· Draft initial templates of complaints, motions, briefs and discovery for federal civil litigation

· Collaborate with attorneys and community partners to develop educational events as needed

· Attend regular staff meetings and trainings as required

· Ensure work duties are being performed in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations

· Represent MLFA’s values on a daily basis

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

· Minimum of 2 years of paralegal experience

· Paralegal certification preferred

· Minimum of 2 years of experience in civil law preferred

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite

· Prior nonprofit experience preferred

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This is a full-time position with a salary range of $50,000 per year. Benefits offered include 401(k), health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, disability insurance and paid time off.
